So what's it all about?
Agent Jacques Kristoff (Van Damme) has to escort cat burglar Galina
Konstantin (Harring) and her heist of biological weapons across the border
by train. Terrorist Mason Cole (Tomas Arana) hijacks the train to steal
the weapons and Kristoff has to stop him.
Unfortunately Kristoff's family have boarded the train to surprise him
and are taken hostage. Now Kristoff must not only save his family, but
also stop an outbreak of smallpox.
Is it any good?
Well, not really. Hijacked trains and stolen biological weapons have
been done before and Derailed fails to add anything new. On the positive
side Van Damme's acting is better than usual. He keeps his shirt on during
the entire film and there are no gratuitous replays of the fight scenes
(which aren't that spectacular) from different camera angles.
With action films a lot hinges on the villian - his witty lines and
callous, evil acts, but in this case the dialogue is unimaginative,
the acting extremely poor and the villains fail to inspire.
The special effects are not bad - there's an interesting wire sequence
in a theatre, fairly impressive car chase and realistic train collision.
This one is for diehard Van Damme fans only.
Score: 2/5
How about those special features?
Not much here, except for a few trailers and a single featurette
comprising an interview with Van Damme, Harring, Misiorowski and an
detailed look at the models used for the train sequences.
