DVD REVIEW

The Gospel

Director: Rob Hardy
Cast: Boris Kodjoe, Clifton Powell, Yolanda Adams, Omar Gooding, Fred Hammond & Nona Gaye
Classification: A
Running Time:
99 min

Set in the choir singing heartland of Atlanta, The Gospel is a compelling modern retelling of the biblical story of the prodigal son.
As youngsters, David (Kodjoe) and Charles (Elba) study for the priesthood in David's father's church, but after his mother dies, David leaves the church to pursue a career as a r&b musician. After 15 years away he returns home when his father falls ill. In the meantime, Charles has been groomed to succeed Bishop Taylor and a rivalry develops between the two men regarding the future of the church. David is soon confronted with the choice of returning to a glamourous career or remaining to fulfill his father's vision.
Kodjoe frequently seems out of his depth in the lead role, but is well supported through a strong performances by Elba and Omar Gooding as the music agent. The Gospel highlights the struggle people face in the battle between outward success and personal hapiness. The challenges the cast face and paths they ultimately choose, makes this an engrossing movie to watch and the funky and beautiful gospel songs performed a pleasure to listen to.
